History of Night Safari Singapore
The Night Safari Singapore wasn’t always a roaring success story. It all began with a spark of inspiration!
In 1987, then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong was so impressed by a nighttime tour of the Singapore Zoo that he envisioned regular night visits for the public, calling it “Singapore Safari.”
Meanwhile, the visionary team behind the Singapore Zoo, led by Dr. Ong Swee Law and Lyn de Alwis, was exploring a groundbreaking concept: showcasing nocturnal animals in expansive, natural habitats after dark. This innovative idea stemmed from the fact that many tropical creatures are most active at night. By replicating a jungle setting under the stars, visitors could experience wildlife behavior in a whole new light.
Fast forward to 1989, and the design for Night Safari was underway. The goal? To recreate the magic and thrill of a nighttime adventure in the wild. Moats became natural barriers, trams weaved through drive-through habitats, special lighting mimicked moonlight, and walking trails offered an immersive forest experience on foot.
Finally, on May 26, 1994, Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong officially opened the world’s first Night Safari. “Tonight, I open Night Safari with a warm feeling of pride,” he declared. “This is the only one of its kind in the world!”
From the very beginning, Night Safari was a hit. Locals and tourists alike flocked to experience the wonder of nocturnal wildlife. In its first year, visitor numbers soared to 760,000 – a staggering 90% above projections! Today, Night Safari remains a beloved attraction, consistently winning awards and welcoming over a million guests annually.
The story of Night Safari is one of imagination, innovation, and a deep connection to wildlife. It’s a testament to the power of a good idea and the dedication of those who brought it to life.
